sky blue

This is a wood carving of a blue-banded bee (Amegilla cingulata).
It is made of Japanese cypress and colored with acrylic paint.
The size is approximately 8.5 cm in height, 5.5 cm in width, and 8.5 (5.5) cm in depth (the number in parentheses is the size of the body only with parts removed).

Blue is said to represent human longing.
This may be because there are so few blue creatures in nature, making their rarity feel special.

While bees are often associated with yellow and black stripes, there are several types of blue bees in Japan, sometimes called "blue bees that bring happiness."

The blue-banded bee is a species with incredibly beautiful blue stripes.
Its bright sky blue, which seems to reflect human longing, shifts into iridescent colors depending on the angle.
Despite their beauty, they are actually found throughout Japan south of Honshu.

I had admired and searched for them for a long time, only to realize that they had been visiting the false indigo in my garden every year.

I believe they will be making their appearance again soon.
I hope you will try looking for them.
