This is a wood carving of a dog (Kishu dog).
The material is cypress, and it is colored with acrylic paint.
It measures approximately 10cm in height, 5cm in width, and 7cm in depth.
During the Edo period, when pilgrimages to Ise Jingu became popular, it is said there was a custom of having one's dog make the pilgrimage on behalf of the owner who could not go themselves.
The dog would be sent off with money tied around its neck using a shimenawa rope, and various people it met along the way would help it on its journey, eventually reaching Ise Jingu—a place it had never been—and returning safely with an amulet as proof of the pilgrimage.

It is said that in Japan, there was a culture of asking dogs to visit shrines on your behalf in the old days (the Edo period).
The dog would be sent off with money tied around its neck with a shimenawa rope, and various people it would meet along the way would help it on its journey.
The dog would be fed and lodged by various people on its journey, paid for its care with the money tied around its neck, and sometimes someone would add more money, and the dog would make the long journey to Ise Shrine, which it had never been to before, and return with a gofuda, a talisman to prove that it had visited the shrine safely.
