This is a wood carving of a larva (Graphium doson).
The material is cypress and the coloring is acrylic paint.
The size is approximately 10 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 10 cm deep.

The larva with the eye-dot pattern is said to mimic a snake.
I think it is common for people to look at things with eye-dots as some kind of creature or character, but I find the character-like appearance of the Mikado swallowtail larva to be amazing.
Moreover, as the larva molts, the color changes from dark brown to orange to yellow, and then to green, while keeping the eye-dot pattern.
This butterfly is found in the southern parts of Japan, and right now in my hometown, it is just the time of year when larvae of all these colors can be seen.
