This is a wood carving of a deer (Cervus nippon).
It is made of cypress and painted with acrylics.
The dimensions of the figure itself are approximately 13 cm in height, 6 cm in width, and 5 cm in depth.
The idiom "calling a deer a horse" refers to the act of forcing an unreasonable situation through the sheer power of authority.
It is said to originate from a story in the Chinese Records of the Grand Historian, where an ambitious official presented a deer to a young emperor, calling it a horse, to test his subjects' loyalty by seeing who would dare to correct him.
One theory suggests that the Japanese word for "idiot" or "fool," *baka* (written with the characters for "horse" and "deer"), is derived from this very story.
Many people seem to turn into "horse-deers" (fools) when they gain power.
Perhaps it is because those who had the courage to call it a deer were killed.

The term "deer as horse" refers to the practice of using one's authority as a pretext to force one to do something that makes no sense.
It is said to be based on a story in China about a man with ambition for power who, when plotting a rebellion, decided to test whether his subjects would follow him or not, and presented a deer to the young emperor of the time, calling it a horse.
In Japan, the word for idiot is "馬鹿(horse deer)" and there is a theory that it is derived from the aforementioned story.
Many people become 馬鹿(horse deer) when they have power.
Is it because they killed the man who answered "deer"?
