南天　turn a misfortune

木彫のユキヒョウです。
素材はヒノキ、着彩はアクリル絵の具です。
サイズは約高さ12㎝、横幅5.5㎝、奥行き12㎝です。

最低な時は、必ず終わる。
終わるときには、きっと自分が想像もできなかった、思わぬ好転に恵まれる。

冬に赤い実を付ける南天は名前の音が「難転」と聞こえるから、禍を転ずるとして縁起の良い植物なのだそうだ。
春一番に咲く福寿草と合わせて、「禍転じて福となす」なのだそう。

Heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica), which bears red berries in winter, is said to be an auspicious plant because its Japanese name sounds like "nanten = turn a misfortune".
Also, the Japanese name of forked-stem adonis (Adonis ramosa), which blooms first in spring, sounds like "fukujyusou = to receive good fortune," so these two plants together are known in Japan as "kakuma-turnover = to receive good fortune," a good omen for the New Year.
