木彫りの犬(紀州犬)です。
素材はヒノキ、着彩はアクリル絵の具です。
サイズは約高さ10cm、横幅5cm、奥行き7cmです。

伊勢神宮へ参拝へ行くことが流行した江戸時代、行きたくても行けない主人の代わりに、飼い犬に参拝に行ってもらう文化があったらしい。
注連縄で犬の首にお金を括って送り出すと、道中出会う様々な人が手助けをして、行ったこともない伊勢神宮へたどり着き、無事に参拝した証の御札を持って帰ってくるのだそう。

This is a wood carving of a dog (Kishu dog).
The material is cypress, and the coloring is acrylic paint.
The size is about 10cm high, 5cm wide, and 7cm deep.

It is said that in Japan, there was a culture of asking dogs to visit shrines on your behalf in the old days (the Edo period).
The dog would be sent off with money tied around its neck with a shimenawa rope, and various people it would meet along the way would help it on its journey.
The dog would be fed and lodged by various people on its journey, paid for its care with the money tied around its neck, and sometimes someone would add more money, and the dog would make the long journey to Ise Shrine, which it had never been to before, and return with a gofuda, a talisman to prove that it had visited the shrine safely.

素材が木なので、吸湿と乾燥を繰り返すことで割れが発生する可能性があります。なるべく湿度の変化の少ない場所で保管することをお勧めします。特に直射日光が当たる場所やエアコンの吹き出し口付近での保管は木の劣化を早めるので避けて下さい。
